MARKERS

17. Headlight will be displayed continuously to the front of every train in the direction in which train is moving. It must be extinguished when a train turns out to meet another and has stopped clear of main track.
During daylight hours headlight must be dimmed; also at night while:
(a) Passing through yards;
(b) Approaching stations at which stops are to be made or where trains are receiving or discharging passengers; or approaching train order signals, junctions, terminals, meeting points, or while standing on main track;
(c) On two or more tracks when approaching a train in the opposite direction; provided trains are not nearing a public road crossing at grade; approaching fixed signals when the view of the signal is improved thereby.
When an engine is running backward not provided with a headlight, a white light must be displayed toward the direction of movement.

18. Yard engines will display headlight, or a white light, at night at each end of the engine, except headlight on end coupled to cars may be extinguished.
Other engines, moving in yards at night without trains must display headlight or white light in the direction of movement, and red light to the rear.

19. If equipment permits, the following signals must be displayed, one on each side of the rear of every train, as markers, to indicate the rear of the train:
By Day: Marker lamps not lighted, except that fixed electrical markers must be lighted continuously displaying red to rear.
By Night: Red lights to rear and yellow lights to front and side except when train is clear of main and secondary track, when yellow lights must be displayed to the front, side and rear. Front and side display will be omitted when markers are not equipped for such display.
When a flashing type marker is used, only one marker is required to indicate the rear of the train.
By Day: Marker not flashing.
By Night: Marker flashing.
Flagman and other employes in charge of flashing type battery powered markers will display marker on right side of train, checking at intervals to insure that it is lighted at night.
A train not equipped to display the prescribed signals will display a red flag by day and a red light by night to indicate the rear of the train.
A red flag by day and a red light by night must be displayed to the rear, away from the direction of movement, on engines or cars occupying secondary and main tracks within yard limits and on cars occupying secondary tracks outside of yard limits.
