CAB SIGNAL RULES

NOTE: Rules 550 to 562 inclusive, will only be effective on portions of the Railroad specified in the Time Table or by General Order.

550. Before leaving engine terminal engineman must make the required departure tests.

551. Engines equipped with cab signal apparatus must not enter cab signal territory without having cut-out cock in cut-in position.

552. Cab signals will not indicate track conditions when:

(a) Passing over cut-in loops.
(b) Engine is moving backward.
(c) Outside of cab signal territory.
(d) Moving against the current of traffic.

553. The display of a green cab signal while passing over a cut-in loop indicates that the cab signal apparatus has cut in.

554. Engineman must not operate the acknowledging lever until after signal indication has been observed and is being obeyed.

555. Cab signal indications do not supersede fixed signal indications, except when cab signal changes after passing a fixed signal.

556. If after passing a fixed signal, the cab signal indication changes from restricted speed to a more favorable indication, speed must not be increased until train has run its length.

557. Should cab signal and fixed signal indications conflict, the more restrictive indication will govern except as noted otherwise in Rules 281A, 281B, 281C, 281D, 281E, 281F, 282A, 283,283B, 284, 286, 287 and 288. These exceptions do not apply when cab signal displays Restricting (Rule 290) except for movements within interlocking limits when fixed signal displays Slow-Clear (Rule 287) or Slow-Approach (Rule 288).

558. When cab signal apparatus fails in cab signal territory or when cab signal indications conflict with fixed signal indications at two fixed signal locations in succession, thereby indicating a probable defect in the cab signal apparatus, and repairs cannot be made by engineman, such train or engine will proceed, governed by fixed signal indications but not exceeding medium speed, to the next point of communication and there report to and receive instructions from the Superintendent.

560. In cab signal territory, if the cab signal warning whistle sounds longer than six seconds, the trainman nearest operating compartment on an MU, RDC, or Control Car will immediately go to the engineman and ascertain cause.

561. Cab signal will govern the entrance to blocks equipped with block markers.
Except where Rule 261 is in effect, on single track, when cab signal displays Restricting (Rule 290) at a block marker, train may proceed, preceded by a flagman until he can see the block signal in advance in the approach or proceed indication, when flagman may be taken up and the train proceed to that signal at restricted speed, or until an approach or less restrictive indication is displayed by the cab signal.

562. When the speed control apparatus fails and must be cut out enroute, train will proceed governed by cab signal (if known to be operative) and fixed signal indications. If cab signal has also failed, train will be governed as per Rule 558. Report of failure must be made by Train Radio or at first regular stop.
