DEFINITIONS

BLOCK

BLOCK-A length of track of defined limits, the use of which is governed by block signals, cab signals, or both, or Manual Block Rules.

MANUAL BLOCK-A block, the control of which is maintained by a designated employe, through the use of communications, for which Manual Block Rules are in effect.

BLOCK MARKER-A sign of fixed location indicating the limit of block.
In cab signal territory, a number plate attached to a post or signal instrument case designating the entrance to a block.

BLOCK SYSTEMS

BLOCK SYSTEM-A series of consecutive blocks.

AUTOMATIC BLOCK SYSTEM (ABS) --A series of consecutive blocks governed by block signals, cab signals, or both, actuated by a train, or engine, or by certain conditions affecting the use of a block

.MANUAL BLOCK SYSTEM (MBS) -- A block, or series of consecutive blocks for which Manual Block Rules are in effect.

TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM (TCS) -- A block signal system under which train movements are authorized by block signals, cab signals, or both, whose indications supersede the superiority of trains for both opposing and following movements on the same track.

DIVISION

DIVISION-That portion of a railroad assigned to the supervision of a Superintendent.

SUB-DIVISION-A portion of a division designated by Time Table.

ENGINES

ENGINE-A unit propelled by any form of energy or a combination of such units operated from a single control.

CONTROL CAR-A passenger car equipped with engine and air brake controls, whereby it may control an engine located elsewhere in a train.

INTERLOCKING

INTERLOCKING-An arrangement of signals and signal appliances so interconnected that their movements must succeed each other in proper sequence and for which interlocking rules are in effect. It may be operated manually, automatically, or by remote control (Controlled Point).

INTERLOCKING LIMITS-The tracks between the home signals of an interlocking.

ROUTE-The way or course which is, or is to be, traveled.

PI LOT

PILOT-An employe assigned to a train when the engineman or conductor, or both, are not fully acquainted with the physical characteristics or rules of the railroad, or portion of the railroad, over which the train is to be moved.

SIGNALS

FIXED SIGNAL-A signal of fixed location indicating a condition affecting the movement of a train, engine or cars, and includes such signals as switch, train order, block, interlocking, semaphore, disc, stop boards, yard limit boards, slow boards, or other means for displaying indications that govern the movement of a train, engine or cars.
NOTE: Switch signal is a reflector, a light or a target.

APPROACH SIGNAL-A fixed signal used in connection with one or more signals to govern the approach thereto.

BLOCK SIGNAL-A fixed signal at the entrance of a block to govern trains, engines or cars entering and using that block.

INTERLOCKING SIGNALS-The fixed signals of an interlocking.

HOME SIGNAL-A fixed signal at the entrance of a route or block to govern trains, engines or cars entering and using that route or block.

DWARF SIGNAL-A low home signal.

CAB SIGNAL-A signal located on an engine indicating a condition affecting the movement of a train or engine and used in conjunction with interlocking signals and block signals, or in lieu of block signals.

SIGNAL ASPECT-The appearance of a fixed signal, conveying an indication as viewed from the direction of an approaching train; the appearance of a cab signal conveying an indication as viewed by an observer in the cab of an engine or control car.

SIGNAL INDICATION-The information conveyed by the aspect of a signal.

SPEEDS

NORMAL SPEED-The maximum speed permitted by Time Table or General Order for a designated track.

LIMITED SPEED-A speed not exceeding forty-five (45) miles per hour.

MEDIUM SPEED A speed not exceeding thirty (30) miles per hour.

SLOW SPEED-A speed not exceeding fifteen (15) miles per hour.

REDUCED SPEED-Proceed prepared to stop short of train or obstruction.

RESTRICTED SPEED-Proceed prepared to stop short of train, obstruction, or switch not properly lined, but not exceeding fifteen (15) miles per hour.

YARD SPEED-A speed that will permit stopping within one-half the range of vision.

SPEED WHEN ACCEPTING APPROACH SIGNALS -- In conforming to the speed requirements when operating under Rule 285, the train should not exceed Medium Speed when passing the signal. When the signal cannot be seen a sufficient distance to reduce to Medium Speed before passing the signal, the speed should be reduced as soon as proper handling of train will
permit.
NOTE: The speed prescribed by the indication of a signal may be modified by Time Table or General Order.

STATIONS

BLOCK STATION-A place designated by Time Table as the limit of a block for which Manual Block Rules are in effect.

INTERLOCKING STATION-A place from which an interlocking is operated.

STATION-A place designated in the Time Table by name.

CONTROLLED POINT (CP) -- A location where home signals and switches are remotely controlled.

TIME TABLE

TIME TABLE-The authority for the movement of regular trains subject to the rules. It contains classified schedules with special instructions relating to the movement of trains.

SCHEDULE-That part of a Time Table which prescribes class, direction, number and movement for a regular train.

TRACKS

MAIN TRACK-A track extending through yards and between stations, upon which trains are operated by Time Table or train order, or both, or the use of which is governed by block signals.

SECONDARY TRACK-A track designated by Time Table or General Order upon which trains and engines may be operated without Time Table authority, train orders or block signals.

SINGLE TRACK-A main track upon which trains are operated in both directions.

TWO OR MORE TRACKS-Two or more main tracks upon any of which the current of traffic may be in either specified direction.

CURRENT OF TRAFFIC-The movement of trains on a main track, in one direction, specified by the rules.

SIDING-A track auxiliary to the main track for meeting or passing trains.

CONTROLLED SIDING-A siding where movements are governed by signal indication, for which TCS Rules are in effect.

SIDE TRACK-A track, other than a siding, auxiliary to the main track.

YARD-A system of tracks provided for the making up of trains, storing of cars and other purposes, over which movements not authorized by Time Table, or by train order, may be made, subject to prescribed signals and rules, or special instructions.

ELECTRICALLY LOCKED SWITCH-A hand operated switch equipped with an electrically controlled device which restricts the movement of the switch.

SPRING SWITCH-A switch equipped with a spring mechanism arranged to restore the switch points to normal position after having been trailed through.
