14. ENGINE WHISTLE SIGNALS

NOTE: The signals prescribed are illustrated by "o" for short sounds;" -"for longer sounds. The sound of the whistle should be distinct, with intensity and duration proportionate to the distance signal is to be conveyed.
SOUND INDICATION
(a) o Apply brakes. Stop.
(b) - - Release brakes. Proceed.
(c) - o o o Flagman protect rear of train.

or repeated until engine or control car shall have passed the crossing; when passing trackman's protable whistle sign (See Rule 298B); also when view is obstructed by weather or other conditions, approaching interlockings, yards or other points where men may be at work.
(m) - (long) Approaching station platforms, at which passenger trains stop, as prescribed by third paragraph of Rule 30.
(n) - - o Approaching meeting or waiting points. See Rule S-90.
(o) o - Inspect train line for leak or for brakes sticking.
(p) o o o...... Succession of short sounds. Alarm for persons or live stock on the track.
(q) - o When running against the current of traffic: (1) Approaching stations, curves or other points where view may be obscured. (2) Approaching passenger or freight trains and when passing freight trains. (3) Preceding the signals prescribed by (d), (e), (f).
(r) o o - Answer to flagman's stop signal.
(s) o o o o o o To enter shop or repair track during working hours of repair force.
15. The explosion of two torpedoes is a signal to reduce speed and be on the alert for a flagman or obstruction or train ahead for a distance of one mile. The explosion of one torpedo will indicate the same as two, but the use of two is required.
Torpedoes must not be placed at stations or on public crossings.
Torpedoes exploded by track cars must be replaced.
