Terrific site with lots of good info. I'm originally from Passaic, where the Erie ran down the middle of the main street. Have lots of pictures of the Erie & some DL&W from the 50's.

I am part of a planning committee for our local Boy Scouts of America district. We had the idea in May, to plan a camporee with a railroad theme. We could camp right next to the CMSL and have access to the rail line, have Railroading Merit Badge Counselors and some displays for about 200 scouts. We are haveing trouble contacting the CMSL and finding local knowledgeable people who would be able to attend the weekend of Nov. 5-7. Any offers or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am a former Erie Lackawanna / Conrail / and now, I guess Norfolk Southern B&B Mechanic. Actually, I still work for the railroad. I hired out for the EL in 1975 as a trackman. Although it has been a tough job to deal with ( staying away from home and all), I really do not think that I would have enjoyed any other job as much as I have this one. I have been everywhere in the northeast part of this country from New York to Chicago and from Watertown to Washington D.C.I think that if I had to choose a favorite spot, I think the River line along the Hudson ( west shore) would be my pick. Being a bridge guy, they stick in my mind the most. I've worked on : the Starucca Viaduct, Rock bridge in Altoona, Portage High Bridge, the Fred Day Viaduct in Jersey City, Upper Bay bridge, the Hack bridge , also in Jersey City, and just about every damned bridge on the Southern Tier of Conrail, from Suffern, New York, to Buffalo, New York. I have no regrets. Thank You for this forum.

i am trying to find detailed maps of rr of eastern nc, for history, and hiking. there are quite a few rr,. tram rr i have not heard about, but are listed on maps,and some of the elder folks dont seem toknow much. i need enough details of the maps to look for old sites, bridge crossings (pilings).also any history of these. maps i have so far are steam powered piedmont issue. any help would be appreciated. thanks lorenzo

I grew up in North Bergen, adjacent to the Park in upper right hand corner of the "Waterfront Map." There was (& probably still is, another terminal north of this map, reached by a tunnel under the Palisades. It originally served a Ford plant, and later the Sea-Land terminal. A single-track line connected it to the Weehawken terminal. There was a steam engine service facility adjacent to the terminal and a trolley that came down the Palisades to the terminal. West of the tunnel under the Palisades, which is under and between 48th & 49th Streets in Union City, and then some 20-30 blocks north was a large roundhouse. furnish it from

FROM 1896 INTO THE 1930's there was a line running from the CNJ Southern Div. at Atsion to the PRSL {C&A} at Atco and over to Williamstown Jct. on the PRSL {ACRR} and on from there to Williamstown. The line from Atsion to Atco was built by Raritan & Delaware Bay R.R. C.o.in the 1860's and was operated by then and riped up during the 1930's depression. The line from Atco to Williamstown was built by the Williamstown and Delaware Bay R.R. Co. in 1872. The line from Atco to Williamstown Jct. was abandoned in 1932 as the PRSL merger. Great maps. I found many traces of old tracks during my recent visit to New York and New Jersey (such as the abandoned CRRNJ tracks at Elizabeth and the preserved terminal near the Liberty Science Center) and wondered where they went, until when they operated etc. I'm still looking for information until when each terminal on the west side of the Hudson River (Weehawken, Hoboken, Jersey City...) operated, and where exactly they were located. As you mostly have information by the original (competing) railroads, none of them seems to show the entire picture ....

A very intersting web site. As a European i find it difficult to understand why you dont have so many passenger train services in the states. I live in a village with a population of 6,000 we have trains every 30 minutes in each direction from 6 a.m. thru until 1 a.m. is it possible to buy re prints of old train schedules?

Great maps!! Would be interesting to see different years. For instance, Lehigh Valley system map does not show full extent of Elmira, Cortland & Northern, much of which had been abandoned by the '30s.

Congratulations on your fine work. The CNJ diagrams may be from after April 30, 1967 because the interconnection with LVRR at Aldene is indicated and also the trackage over the Newark Bay draw looks as if it is only two tracks and a storage track. I lived along the CNJ for many years. My Dad rode train 101 out of Jersey City for over 25 years. I recall taking the CNJ from Jackson Ave. Jersey City during WW II to visit my grand parents at the Jersey shore. After living in Jersey City I lived on the cut in Bayonne at 33rd Street. I used to walk him to the train at 33rd St. Station. The station master was a gentleman named Mr. Dobbins. This was in the late 1940's. He used to pay me 10 cents a day during the summer to bring the afternoon papers up to the station from trackside as they were thrown from the baggage cars or combines. I was privileged to lived next to the CNJ and enjoyed railroading during the age of steam. I have never forgotten it and finding your web page was wonderful. Do you possibly have the location of signals along the main line as you do on the Elizabethport-Perth Amboy line? I have an employee time table for the main line dated April 1940 when the New York-Newark high line was in operation. I also have employee time tables for the main line and pennsylvania divison for Summer 1961. My greatest joy as a child was being around the railroad. i do not think anyone could have had a better time. Many thanks! Jim Quinn

Thank You The info on the New Jersey Coastal run from Jersey City to Bay Head will be very usefull to me when I finilize my plans to model the run in HO scale. I'm still collecting data to determine origins and terminations of passenger and freight service to and from the Matawan to Bay Head section for the late 50's and early 60's era.
