Thanks for the journey down memory lane with the maps. Having been raised in Matawan from 1947 and still living here I have seen much change on the NY & LB. I recall the thrill of going to the train station with my mother and sister to pickup my father who commuted via PRR to Newark. The memories of the K4s and Camelbacks coming and going at the rush hour is still fresh in my mind. That was truly the era of railroading.

I am a conductor for Norfolk Southern r.r. I must say your site was very helpful in helping me qualify some of the physical characteristics of the railroad in NJ. Its amazing that the same lines i operate over going to Harrisburg PA were the same lines used by the old jersey railroads. stuff shown on your maps here dont even exist out here anymore. i would have had no idea they did exist if it wasnt for your maps shown on this website. Excellect website. keep up the good work!!! Michael Lopez

I commuted to Jersey City from Fanwood for 1 year until the Aldene plan came into effect. On the last Friday of commuter service out of Jersey City I had the pleasure of riding in the cab of an FM Trainmaster with engineer Lester Eick at the controls it was the 5:22 express out of Jersey City with the first stop Fanwood and the last stop Dunellen although I got off at Fanwood It's something I'll remember all of my life.

Tonight I have discovered something which may be of considerable interest to someone here. It is a small, light green, tri-fold Time Table card bearing the following: C.R.R. of N.J. Westfield, New York, Newark Corrected to Dec. 10, 1916 It shows only very slight wear since it was apparently used as a book marker and left inside a book dated 1901 until now. I have had the book for many years in a collection and was valuating some of them when I discovered it inside, during the night. It bears extensive advertising from: PEOPLE'S BANK AND TRUST CO. of Westfield and has a picture of the bank on the front. If interested in acquiring it, please contact me.

My HO layout "Eastern T & C" Timber & Coal or Tom & Carl's Eastern contains all of the above roads. I grew up in Camden NJ next to the Pavonia yard, which was my playground, and watched PRSL & PRR Steam do their thing. My father fired for the PRR Atlantic Freight Division so I have railroading in my blood. After retiring, began collecting & now building, with life long friend Carl our HO layout. By setting the theme in the Pennsylvania coal & timber area I can interchange with all of my favorite flags. Because this is a freelance setup I can use my collection of 55+ steam & diesel engines plus over 300 cars in either a seperate or combined mode. The layout is two level, blocked, DC & DCC allowing me to run old DC & new DCC units in any combination that I want. This is mostly thanks to Carl who is a retired electronics engineer and the "chief engineer" of the road. He designed, & built the layout. I worked with Carl, provided the space & paid for all of the materials. My title is "chief financier". So far we have been able to incorperate all of our "what if" ideas that we have had. I've just ordered a RDG T1 4-8-4 #2124 for my Xmas present. Carl will have a bird. He feels I have enough engines.

My husband's grandfather lost a leg while working for the "steam railroad" in New Jersey. They lived in Elizabeth,NJ. I was wondering if any railroaders out there might know what that would be referring to. My husband is an orphan and little information his family. also at one time Theodor Zylka worked for Standard Oil--did they run a railroad in New Jersey? Thanks for any help at all. We support all you are doing with the historical station in Pemberton! No one needs another Wawa, we believe the value of the town will increase if there is more of a historical feel to it. Between the antique shops and hiking/biking trails, Pemberton could be a fantasticly quaint town of value! Many people have done extensive repairs on their homes to upgrade there. Please support the train museum! The powers that be claim that there is not enough interest in trains that would draw people to it. Pemberton needs a nice restraunt and something classy, not another coffee stop/uber gas station (there are already 2 other big name gas stations there) to clog the streets up more then it is.

My fatehr took my brother and me down the stairs leadind to the old Erie Trackbed in Jersey City near Charlotte Circle (US Route 1 and 9). We watched the Steam Locomotives pass on both sides of us as they headed toward Rutherford, Greenwood Lake, and the Susquanna Line which ran North parallel to Tonelle Avenue. The engeneers blew their whistle as they passed. And I enjoyed watching the switching mechanisms routing the trains. Also watching the signals change. What a way to grow up. I worked briefly with the Jersey Central in JC, NJ and now wish I stayed with the RR. I still enjoy watching the trains go by, but am saddened by the development that goes on along the right of way. They are destroying my childhood memories. Also, the excess security restrictions which are probably necessary becasue of the terrorist threats. Thank you for supplying the many photos adn stories. I may join the Erie Historical Society one of these years. Joe.

Dear Mr. Sundermeyer, I have been working for the last seven to eight years reactivating the rvrr and old b&o running track also known as the sirr ot sirt.I have taken much heat from the nimbys from roselle pk,springfield, kenilworth(carol westervelt and friends) and summit. We are very close to completion of the sirr portion of the railroad.I believe that it may even be up and running by february of 2005.You have a nice website snd i for my part have the original sirt blueprints of which i paid 250.00 bucks for from dave cramer out in wisconsin a few years back. in fact these very blueprints were used to insure correct alignment of track during rehab of sirr. Having lived in Dumont, NJ for all of my young life (until age 23)I never appreciated the incredible impact and significance of what was provided to us by the people who worked the rails. My Father spoke about a time when Dumont sported four tracks. It was down to two when I was in high school. My wife's father worked in NY from 1937 until his death in 1955. He took a train from Dumont, NJ to Weehawkeen(just on Mondays for some unknown reason, according to my mother-in-law who is still alive at 88.)I'm trying to find out what railroad, passenger car and engine type he may have been aboard during this time. If anyone might know or could directed me how to find out, it would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to buy an O scale train set, if one has been make, of the train he traveled.

Now, if you could only help me find a good map of the NYCentral System's Putnam branch. But I'll keep looking.

Ever hear of the Raritan River RR? Used to run from S. Amboy, I think to New Brunswick. I remember a small yard on Sanford St. & Commercial Ave. I can remember trains running to the Squibb plant on Georges Rd. My wife's grandfather told stories of how they would board a passenger train there in the summer & then connect with I think the PRR shore line and go to the beach for the day. I wonder if any one else recalls this line.

I've enjoyed looking at the 1946 map with the line that ran up the North Jersey Coast (east of the current line between Bay Head and New York City). Our family house where I grew up in Long Branch, NJ was across the street from that line (line no longer exists). There was a station on that line two blocks south. It had been a passenger line, but when I was little we saw freight trains go by. There's a lot more on your website to look at. Thanks.

I am looking for 1940-50's pictures of the paterson depot and anything relating to this line(which ran on the old "MORRIS CANAL'S" route through passaic county.ie. canal right of way.It was located at the intersection of Canal st.&Lackawanna ave. in SW paterson nj.Now Rte.19 runs on the old right of way(from the garden state parkway exit to rte.19 north,to connect to I-80west,which also is on old right of way of same E/L spur). The spur began just north of where rte.46 bridge spans over the main line still in use by conrail in clifton.I found a site "erierr.railfan.net/boonline.html" but sadly no references to any station or history of same.Since it(station) was at the foot of Lackawanna ave,i assume it was a lackawanna rr property, but 40 years later,im not sure! It carried both frieght and passenger service up till abandonment in the early 60's.My how time flys. I'm 50 now,and still remember almost being flattened by a steam locomotive when 9 years old.My father and i were exploring the canalbed next to trackside when i slipped away and hearing the train comming, went to stand on the rails to watch. My father was alerted to my absence by the frantic horn blowing of the approaching frieght's engineer. I felt the blast of steam as my father grabbed my neck and yanked me back off the ties as the red faced engineer shook his fist at my father as the train passed over the tie i occupied a second before. What an adventure!! sadly my mother never my "adventure" as my father's warning "DON'T EVER TELL YOUR MOTHER ABOUT THIS" has been kept to this day! Not a bad way to go,though,as any railfan might say!

We have a rail that goes thru our town and has for quite sometime but I don't think this is the same line as the one he is thinking of. Was wondering if you have any info on the line that went thru Mays Landing from Atlantic City. Rail stil intact between AC line and past Reega station (which is no longer there, just a road bearing the same name) ...there is a station house under the Rt. 50 overpass in Mays Landing and an old train bridge near the same area. Evidence of removed remains in some of the streets nbear the library...this connected to the Glassboro line (which was supposed to be the new light rail methinks!)...also, a friend of mine just walked the old right of way that connected Mays Landing with Egg Harbor City. Some of the right of way is intact. The terminus connected at the AC train line. Never knew it was there... He showed me a map with the detail from 1887..very interesting ...any information? In your images of the signals of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad – Statan Island Rapid Transport, the lights above and below the central “circle” of lights sometimes have arms to either side, carrying further lights, and sometimes do not. Is this an error in the images and there are always lamps fitted to either side of the central lamps? Or are these lateral lamps either mounted on some form of movable arm or only present on certain signals where they are needed? Kind regards John

Great site! I learned today that a gggrandfather had been killed at a RR crossing in NJ in 1866 "at the RR crossing at Browning's above Westville" (thisis just south of Gloucester City on the Gloucester Co/Camden Co line). I was looking for NJ maps to try to pinpoint the location and came across your site. He was killed by the "4PM Cape May express" and it's fascinating to actually see your maps and try to figure out where this might have happened.

Spent a day last week tracing the route of the old Rahway Valley Railroad. I grew up just down the street from the "Monsanto Spur". Wow! If there is anyone who remembers this train when it was operating-please go and trace the old tracks! You will be surprised how much of the track is still there. Have fun!!

This is my first foray into the web looking for rail info (I'm using my wife's computer--and her e-mail address). I was born in Hoboken in 1929, lived in Union City to 1942 and in Bergen County to 1988. I've now spent serveral hours finding and reviewing your very good site. I notice that your 1909 NYS&W timetable mahes their trains connect with PRR ferries rather than Erie's. Does that mean that NYS&W operated out of the Exchamge Place PRR station rather than the Erie's at that time (which was around when the Tubes first started running)?

My greatgrandparents owned and operated a hotel on the corner of Atlantic and Mississippi anenue, in Atlantic City, NJ (1880 - 1918). Excursion trans came down Mississippi Avenue and "parked" at the hotel. I have been looking for a photograph showing the Arata Hotel - it served as a waiting room for this terminal. Any ideas?
